February 24, 2009

I’ve captured a few shots of the recently announced colour for the Nokia E66, E71 and N79 comparing side by side with the grey of E66, grey of E71 and the white of N79.

e71_bb1One of the main gripe among Eseries users in Malaysia is the lack of support for BlackBerry. It was a dumb idea from Nokia to drop the support for the most popular push email solution here. I’ve heard a fair bit of comments from those who wanted to upgrade to E71 or E66 only to be turn off by the lack of support for BlackBerry.

Now here is a piece of good news, hopefully it will materialize as according to this interview, RIM is readying support for their service on Nokia devices.

In the interview, Tom Furlong said “We are in the interim period of time when we have dropped support ourselves, and Blackberry is readying support for their service on Nokia devices,”

Black is the colour of the day for Nokia Malaysia has launched the Nokia E66 and Nokia N79 in Black. Both will be available at your local dealers for RRP RM1610 and RM1670 respectively.

The E66 Black may not have a huge colour change impact as many considered the Nokia E66 Grey Steel as black. While the N79’s sexy black exterior really does suits my taste for everything in black.

Buy N-Gage Games with Maxis

January 13, 2009

ngageOne of my complains about N-Gage is it’s payment procedure which only caters to user with credit card. What about those that doesn’t own one? I am sure N-Gage’s target market includes teenagers and college kids that I presume doesn’t have a credit card.

Why.. worry no more! As Maxis together with i-Serve now offers it’s subscribers the chance to buy N-Gage games and having it bill to your phone bill. That’s if you are a Maxis subscriber. If you don’t fancy Maxis charging your purchase to your bill, then you can head to any of the 140 i-Serve kiosks around Malaysia and get your by paying cash. Excellent!

N-Gage user just need to follow a simple on-screen instruction

I certainly hope that other operators will follow suit and also to expand this fantastic solution to not only in i-Serve kiosks but maybe to 7-Eleven? I am sure 7-Eleven has more stores than i-Serve.

pc_accessOne of the think I like about Nokia phones is the option for you to select what type connection do want to use when you plug in the microUSB cable to your PC or laptop.

The earlier Nokia phones that runs on Symbian S60 1st and 2nd edition doesn’t give you that option and whatever you need to do have to go thru the sluggish Nokia PC Suite. When Nokia launched their S60 3rd edition smartphones, you can choose if you want to connect to the PC Suite to perform various function that is available in the Suite, or just basic Data Transfer (or Mass Storage on some models), your PC or laptop will recognise your phone as an external storage, much like how you use your USB thumb drive.

nokia-6208cWith all the hype surrounding the Nokia 5800, billed as the first Nokia S60 touch enabled device. It’s easy not to notice that Nokia is going to launch the first S40 touch screen phone.

Unveiled in China on the last day of 2008, the 6208c is specifically catered to the chinese market as handwriting recognition is much more suited to the different strokes in chinese characters.

This is not the first time Nokia has launch a touch enabled device for the chinese market, remember the Nokia 6708? I am sure not many remember or even knew about the 6708 as in my opinion failed miserably especially in Malaysia. Three reasons I can think of:

  • Using a proprietary charger, USB port and battery – a Nokia user would not be able to use back their charger and USB cable from other Nokia phones.
  • UIQ operating system – A steep learning curve for those who are used to Nokia user interface found on all the other models and you can’t install software that you have on your Nokia S60 phones.
  • Proprietary PC Suite – You have to install a totally different PC Suite just to sync your 6708.

The Nokia 6208c is based on S40 and it would be interesting to see how would the S40 be optimized for touch navigation. The 6208c specification isn’t that impressive at all. Triband 900/1800/1900, GPRS and EDGE,  2.4″ 16M colours display with resolution of 240 x 320, microSDHC, 3.2MP camera, FM Radio, Bluetooth 2.0, 3.5mm Audio Jack.

No news on whether will it be available in Malaysia. I will give you guys the heads up if there is any news about it.
